Week 14

Hello, everyone!

You have two more weeks to work on your ITS...Deeper videos. Remember that the course has hours a week by arrangement. These hours are to be used for filming your videos, gathering any photos necessary, and writing your script.

If you need help with storytelling, picking visuals, or writing the script, please see me. If you need help with video editing, please make arrangements with Alinna so that she can allot time for you.

See you on Thursday!

*Don't forget that we will be having a promotional event on Tuesday from 11:30-2:30. If you would like to attend, we will be in front of the clocktower.

WEEK 13

As we enter the last quarter of the semester, you will be completing your ITS...DEEPER mini-doc videos. On Thursday, you all decided who/what topic you will use to create your videos.

The next three classes will be spent creating, producing, and editing these videos, which will be due on the day of the final. You will also be turning in an audience analysis of the series.

TUESDAY, MAY 28:  On Tuesday, May 28, the PR team will be hosting an event on campus to promote our student media, and the ITS series. You are invited to attend and promote your videos.

See you on Thursday!

Sunday, May 12, 2019

WEEK 12

We have exactly four class times to complete the final mini doc series for ITS...Deeper.

If you do not have a clear idea to profile someone interesting in your mini doc, I will assign you a person on Thursday. You will need to do a completed storyboard by the end of class.

I will show you a few more ideas to view to help spark your creativity in producing these videos.

You can work in groups of two, or on your own.

Remember that the class has hours by arrangement. Those are to be used outside of class to work on collecting video, images, etc. for your videos.

If you want to work in the newsroom after class times (after 2:50 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and after noon on Wednesdays) please see me for some block time to be scheduled.  Thursdays are production afternoons/evenings for the editors and it is difficult for them to work if people are noisy.

See you on Thursday.

WEEK 11

Last week, you all seemed a bit, well, tired!!

This week we we will carefully plan your final projects.

I spoke with Gary Enke about the undocumented student who died from a brain tumor. He is an exceptional person and I hope a couple of you may want to tell his story in one of these mini-documentaries. Gary said his family, girlfriend and teachers could be interviewed.

Please be sure that you are ready to plan out your story. We are going to do this one differently. I'm going to work with you on Thursday on the storytelling aspect before we move on to storyboarding so please brainstorm this weekend on who you would like to do your documentary on. Do some research on our campus and the local community and come in with ideas.

See you on Thursday.

Hey everyone!

Hope you are all following ITS on IG!!! Our PR team and Alinna are doing a fantastic job of getting the videos ready for publishing, and promoting these videos.

Last week, Alinna showed you how to prepare video for publishing on IG TV.

This week, we will move on to the final project, due the day of the final on Thursday, June 13.

So far, you each completed a video, and worked on the Politics video.

You will also participate in an event to promote the videos, and will receive 75 points for your audience analysis.

WEEK 7

Hey everyone!!

Last week we worked on your ITSPolitics video. (And we all missed Alinna terribly, LOL).

This week, with Alinna's assistance, we will finish the final video and get it ready to publish.

We will also work on your ITSDeeper videos. By the end of the day, you should have all of your visuals in your project on Premiere, and a story board with the text you plan to put in the video.

Your first ITSDeeper video will be due Thursday, April 18 at the end of class. Remember that this class has 4.5 hours a week by arrangement which is to be used for filming needed for your projects, additional editing time in the newsroom and at home, and any work needed to complete these videos.

Your first project is worth 150 points.  If you need additional time in the newsroom on Mondays, please arrange that time with me. Also, if you do not have Premiere on your own laptop, you may check out a laptop.

See you on Thursday!

WEEK 6

Now that the conferences are over for the semester, let's get these ITSDeep videos completed.
Your first ITSDeep video is due at the end of class Thursday, April 18. That will give you three full weeks to work on these. Remember that the class has hours by arrangement to allow for time working outside of class hours.

Let's all touch base at the beginning of class on Thursday to see where you're at!

Also, proud to announce that your classmates Kassandra Ruiz, Travis Jepeway, and Audrey Payrano won FIRST PLACE for video series at he conference. This is a major win. We will show you their video in class Thursday.

No more cancellations of classes. Let's make the rest of this semester amazing with work we're proud of!

See you Thursday!!!

WEEK 4

Hi everyone,

Glad you were able to hear Etsy extraordinaire Shadi Jurdi share his wisdom!

This week we will solidify your plans for your first semi-long form piece. Please come to class with your ideas concrete enough to begin storyboarding. Remember that the first one should be one that is easy to execute. I would suggest not using video unless you are comfortable shooting your own video and can do this by next week.

Remember that CLASSES ARE CANCELLED AND NEWSROOM IS CLOSED ON THURSDAY, MARCH 28 DUE TO THE LAST CONFERENCE OF THE SEMESTER.  You will use that time to shoot video/photos if needed so you will be prepared to come back ready to begin producing your pieces with the assistance of our tutor Alinna Boonklin.

*Syllabus assignment and point distribution has been updated to reflect changes discussed in class (ITS...DEEP) and a final project that is a mini doc group project.

WEEK 1

Hello editors!

Welcome to JOUR115, the student media practicum for editors, managers, and senior content creators and producers.

This semester will be 100 percent project based with all of you moving on to become the senior producing staff of InTheSAC. I am hoping we can brainstorm some fantastic ideas to maybe try to attempt some short mini-docs.

We will hit the ground running in week 3. BUT...

This is the first time that our two journalism conferences fall within one week of each other. If you become an editor, or are already an editor, you will have the opportunity to attend one of these amazing conferences -  in NY, LA, SF, Sacramento, and many other places that are yet to be announced.

With that said, THE NEWSROOM WILL BE CLOSED ON THE NEXT TWO THURSDAYS AND THERE WILL BE NO CLASSES. I do not cancel classes but this is something I can't help because both conferences begin on Thursday morning. I will give you reading for those days. If you want to come and talk to me about the course, please come in on Tuesday, or message me to meet Wednesday. Otherwise, we will begin on Thursday, March 14.

NEWSROOM CLOSED AND CLASSES CANCELLED:
THURSDAY, FEB. 28 AND THURSDAY, MARCH 7

Look forward to seeing all of you again!
